Ivan Morgan
I have been a member of Bentley Wildlife Carvers since 2002 and really enjoy meeting up with fellow carvers each month. I am self-taught, but my friends at the club have passed on useful tips and encouragement. I hadn't carved many birds or animals before joining the group - I had been making ornate photo frames, boxes and pots from scraps of wood salvaged from skips or from the beach. I was encouraged to make a panel for the mural that was, for a few years, displayed in the Motor Museum at Bentley and decided to carve a flamingo (as all the panels had to relate to something that could be seen at Bentley). With the closure of Bentley, we took some of the panels to Arundel Wetlands to be displayed there.
We have competitions within the group, everyone carving the same bird, but mine usually look different from the rest as I polish mine rather than paint them.
Since about 2005 I have also been making wooden mechanical models, or automata and, although I have sold or given away lots, I still have a collection of over eighty. I sometimes display some of them at the Woodfair at Bentley and sometimes have an Open House exhibition in Lewes during August Bank Holiday.
Here are some of my carvings. If you would to see more photos of things I have made, including the mechanical models visit my website www.positivelycreative.co.uk .or you can see videos of them on www.YouTube.com/positivelycreative
