More About Bentley Wildlife Carvers
We are a group of around 15 ladies and gentlemen from a wide variety of backgrounds, but we all share a common interest in carving. We design and produce unique hand carved and finished carvings in a variety of subjects, Birds, Fish, and other wildlife, plus other things like decorative walking sticks, love spoons and automata, to name but a few.
We used to meet once a month in the Education room at Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum and, although that is closed to the public, we will still be able to meet there as well as at Arundel WWT on the second Sunday of each month. We meet to show others what we have been working on and pass on advice and tips to each other. We have a group project each year where everyone who wishes to take part makes a particular bird and we have a group ballot to choose the best. They get to keep the treasured trophy for the year.
Our largest display each year is at the Woodfair and we were there in 2019 albeit with a smaller display than usual. The Woodfair will be continuing in future years The carved mural (a very small part of which is shown above) is no longer in one piece. The individual panels were created by members and for several years were displayed in the Motor Museum at Bentley and some are now on display at Arundel Wetlands..
We aim to encourage everyone who have an interest, to take up the craft, at whatever level of competence, and to help in the development of their skills.
This can be done informally at our monthly meetings or at our regular Thursday evening sessions (7pm to 9pm during term-time) at Kings Academy Ringmer (was the Community College).
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced carver there is always a moment when you need to ask advice, get an independent opinion, or be spurred on to extend yourself/your carving. There is no better environment to do this than in a group like ours. Annual subs are only £25 per year (plus a small weekly charge if you also attend the Thursday group)
Our meeting dates for 2021 will be announced as soon as we can meet again.
All meetings and workshops have been suspended because of the current situation. When we are able to reconvene and feel confident that we can do so safely we will announce it on this website and on instagram.
