More About Bentley Wildlife Carvers
We are a group of around 15 ladies and gentlemen from a wide variety of backgrounds, but we all share a common interest in carving. We design and produce unique hand carved and finished carvings in a variety of subjects, Birds, Fish, and other wildlife, plus other things like decorative walking sticks, love spoons and automata, to name but a few.
We used to meet once a month in the Education room at Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum (hence our name) but now it is closed to the public, so we now meet at Arundel WWT usually on the second Sunday of each month. We meet to show others what we have been working on and pass on advice and tips to each other. We have a group project each year where everyone who wishes to take part makes a particular bird and we have a group ballot to choose the best. They get to keep the treasured trophy for the year. We have recently finished our Treecreepers and will be embarking on Goldfinches soon.
Our largest display each year iused to be at the Woodfair and we were there in 2019 albeit with a smaller display than usual. We didn't have a stall at the Woodfair in September 2022 because of lack of availability of our members and we now find it impossible to participate as we no longer have storage for our display equipment on site. which we had enjoyed for more than twenty years. The carved mural (a very small part of which is shown above) is no longer in one piece. The individual panels were created by members and for several years were displayed in the Motor Museum at Bentley, and some are now on display at Arundel Wetlands.
We aim to encourage everyone who have an interest, to take up the craft, at whatever level of competence, and to help in the development of their skills. We have workshops at Arundel Wetlands a few times each year. The next ones are expected to be on the dates shown below from 10am till 4pm each day. If you are interested in carving a Nuthatch, Puffin, Woodpecker, Kingfisher or Robin contact the Arundel Wetlands for details.
You can meet us informally at our monthly meetings or at our regular Thursday evening sessions (7pm to 9pm at Landport Community Rooms, 2a Horsefield Road, Landport, Lewes.)
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced carver there is always a moment when you need to ask advice, get an independent opinion, or be spurred on to extend yourself or your carving skills. There is no better environment to do this than in a group like ours. There is no charge for membership but there is a £3 weekly charge (or £12 a month) when you attend the Thursday group)
